Hercules Segers's Two Trees: An Alder and an Ash — by the experimental Dutch printmaker Rembrandt collected, surviving in only a few impressions, on large-format canvas.

Visual Presence

Two thin-trunked trees rise against a pale stone-green background — an alder on the left with denser, twisting branches; an ash on the right with finer, more open foliage. The treatment is graphic, with copper-toned linework against tinted paper. There is no horizon or contextual scene — just the trees, isolated like a botanical study.

About the Art

Hercules Segers (c.1589–1638) was a Dutch printmaker whose experimental etchings and oil paintings deeply influenced Rembrandt (who collected eight of his works). Two Trees: An Alder and an Ash exemplifies Segers's innovative coloured-paper etching technique: he printed each impression onto coloured prepared paper, often hand-tinting individual prints to create unique objects. Few impressions survive. Segers's experimental approach to print as a unique art object set him apart from his contemporaries and prefigured 20th-century editioned printmaking.
