Echo and Narcissus — John William Waterhouse

An oversized Pre-Raphaelite canvas print in green and red. The deep oak canopy and still, dark pool bring the hush of a shaded riverbank to a hallway, hotel reception or bedroom wall, while Echo's rose-pink robe and Narcissus's red drape keep two warm points of colour glowing against all that green.

Visual Presence

Across the room the wall reads as a cool green woodland with two figures in pink and red glowing at either end, wide enough to carry a long hallway or the full wall above a sofa or bed. The dark foliage and grey rocks calm a bright space rather than compete with it, and the strip of pale sky along the top keeps the wall from feeling heavy. Narcissus's reflection in the black water only resolves as you come closer, so the piece keeps pulling people down a corridor toward it.

About the Art

John William Waterhouse (1849–1917), Academic, painted 1903. John William Waterhouse painted the defining image of Ovid's myth: Narcissus locked to his own reflection in the pool, and Echo, the nymph condemned to repeat only the words of others, watching from the far bank with everything she cannot say. Waterhouse stages the tragedy across a single stretch of dark water — two figures a metre apart who will never meet. Shown at the Royal Academy's Summer Exhibition, the canvas was bought the same year for Liverpool's Walker Art Gallery, where it remains one of the collection's best-loved works. We chose it because no other painting holds longing and self-absorption together on one quiet riverbank.
