Hylas and the Nymphs — John William Waterhouse
An oversized Pre-Raphaelite canvas print in green and white. The deep lily-pond greens sink a living room, hotel lounge or bedroom wall into cool water-garden shade, while the nymphs' pale upturned faces and Hylas's blue tunic keep drawing the eye back from across the room.
Visual Presence
At two to three metres the wall becomes a dark water garden, layered greens and bronze shadow that cool a bright space and give pale sofas and timber floors something deep to sit against. The seven nymphs carry the light: under evening lamps their faces and shoulders glow out of the pond while the foliage recedes, so the piece turns more theatrical at night. The story unfolds slowly across the room — first the kneeling figure in blue, then the single hand closed on his wrist — which keeps guests standing in front of it.
About the Art
John William Waterhouse painted the moment the Argonauts lose their gentlest crew member: Hylas, sent ashore to fetch water, kneels at a pool where seven naiads rise among the lilies to pull him under. Manchester Art Gallery bought the canvas straight from the artist, and it has been one of the city's best-loved paintings ever since — so loved that when curators briefly took it off the wall to pose a question about how women are displayed, public protest had it rehung within a week. We chose it because no painting stages temptation more quietly: no monster, just still water, lilies and seven pale faces.

Stretched Canvas Construction
Each canvas is mounted on 4.2 cm (1.65 in) deep stretcher bars made from Australian pine. The canvas is tightly stretched and wrapped around these solid wooden frames, giving it a strong, gallery-grade structure with noticeable depth — ideal for large or statement pieces.
This thickness adds durability and a clean, modern presentation, allowing the artwork to stand out beautifully without additional framing.
Edge Style
By default, all stretched canvases use a mirrored edge for a clean, continuous look. If you prefer a black or white edge, please mention it in your checkout notes; otherwise, the mirrored edge will be applied automatically.
For sizes exceeding 200x300 cm, we will split the canvas into two seamless panels to meet courier shipping limitations. The split is crafted to ensure the image remains continuous and flawless across both panels. You can choose to display the panels with or without a gap for different visual effects.
If you select the framed option, each panel will be framed separately to ensure secure shipping and easy handling.
Examples:
- A 240x300 cm artwork will be divided into two panels of 120x300 cm each.
- A 240x400 cm artwork will be split into two panels of 240x200 cm each.
This approach maintains the visual impact and flexibility of oversized pieces while accommodating shipping needs.
