Composition with Red, Blue and Yellow-Green — Piet Mondrian

An oversized Colourful Abstract canvas print in yellow and red. Its measured grid and grounded, chalky palette bring composed modern order to an executive office, gallery wall or considered living space, holding attention without unsettling the room.

Visual Presence

A tight lattice of black lines divides the canvas into rectangles of unequal weight, anchored by a large clear-red plane at right and broad cracked panels of pale, lime-cast yellow at the centre. Fields of soft grey and bone-white surround them, punctuated by dense black blocks, a deep teal panel at left and slate-blue notes along the edges. The palette is muted and slightly aged, its primaries dimmed toward a quiet, architectural balance.

About the Art

Piet Mondrian painted this grid composition in Paris in 1920, at the moment his Neo-Plastic language reached its mature form. He restricted the picture to straight black lines and planes of colour, yet held back from pure primaries: the yellows shade toward yellow-green, almost lime, and the blues run to teal and slate, so the work sits between his transitional experiments and the stark red-yellow-blue tableaux that followed. It has long been read as an archetype of that later development, an early full statement of the balance between line, colour and empty plane that would define De Stijl. The canvas is signed and dated "PM 20".
