Animals in a Landscape — Franz Marc

An extra large Expressionist Abstract canvas print in red and green. Its vertical drama and radiant colour suit a stairwell, gallery wall or the reception of a design-led space, drawing the eye upward with vivid, energetic presence.

Visual Presence

Animals and terrain dissolve into a prismatic cascade of colour, a pink-red bull with dark horns emerging at the centre while a pale yellow creature curls into the upper left. Splintered planes of scarlet, orange, emerald green and deep blue interlock and radiate outward with explosive energy. The palette is intense and jewel-bright, every form fractured yet held in a taut, harmonious whole.

About the Art

Franz Marc painted Animals in a Landscape in the final year before the First World War, as his vision moved toward the fractured, prismatic forms of Cubism and Futurism. Bovine animals graze and rest among shards of colour, merging with a terrain that is no longer separate from them. Marc worked from his belief in symbolic correspondences between colour and spiritual states — red, blue and yellow burst from the upper corner to bind animal, plant and ground into one charged unity. The painting is held in the Detroit Institute of Arts.
