Two Cats, Blue and Yellow — Franz Marc

A large Expressionist Abstract canvas print in blue and yellow. The deep blue cat curled across the middle slows a busy dining room wall, while the yellow cat's warm glow carries down the length of a hotel lounge or a reception wall.

Visual Presence

At two to three metres wide the blue mass in the centre cools the whole wall, so a cream dining room reads calmer and deeper under evening lamplight. The yellow cat and the red leaves push warmth back into the far corners, so the room never tips cold. From across the space it reads as two big curves of blue and yellow; up close the pale spirals inside the blue fur and the small white house on the green hills come forward.

About the Art

Franz Marc (1880–1916), Expressionism, painted 1912. Franz Marc built a whole colour language before he painted this, and here it is at full strength on a domestic subject. He told August Macke that blue was the male principle, spiritual and astringent, yellow the female principle, gentle and cheerful, and red the heavy matter the other two must overcome — and all three sit in this one picture, in the two cats and the leaves around them. We chose it because it is Marc's Blue Rider thinking, shared with Wassily Kandinsky, reduced to something you can read from across a room. The Kunstmuseum Basel holds the original.
