Men in the City — Fernand Léger

A large Cubist Abstract canvas print in orange and white. Its commanding scale and machine-age energy suit a large wall in an executive office, boardroom or hotel lobby, projecting modern, structured confidence.

Visual Presence

Robotic figures built from cylinders, cones and simplified planes stand amid a crowded scaffold of the modern city — stencilled letters, staircases, windows and signage. Slabs of orange, cobalt blue, green and grey are cut by white and black, with rounded metallic tubes and a stray profiled face pressing in from the edges. The palette is bold and machined, the surface dense and near-airless with urban structure.

About the Art

Fernand Léger painted this definitive version of Les hommes dans la ville after returning from the First World War, at the start of his mechanical period. Responding to the machinery, advertising and signage of the post-war city, he reduced the human figure to de-individualised tubes, cones and planes so that men become as mechanised as the environment around them. Fragments of lettering, railings and architecture are locked together in a shallow, contrast-driven space. The definitive canvas is held in the Thyssen-Bornemisza National Museum, Madrid.
