Discs — Fernand Léger

A big Cubist Abstract canvas print in blue and red. Its energy and scale command a large wall in a creative studio, hospitality lobby or open-plan living space, holding its own as a confident, colour-driven focal point.

Visual Presence

Bold concentric rings in red, blue, green and white wheel across the surface like traffic signals and spinning gears, split into crisp half-tone segments. Cylindrical red and orange bars drive diagonally through the composition, while yellow, purple and black planes lock the whirling discs into a dense, mechanical architecture. The palette is loud and primary, contrasted against cool blues and hard black scaffolding.

About the Art

Fernand Léger painted Discs during the extended sequence of works he devoted to the disc motif in 1918 and 1919, the opening of his so-called mechanical period. Fresh from the First World War, he translated the rhythms of the modern city — traffic lights, signage, turning machinery — into circular forms broken into contrasting colour segments and set against a scaffold of tubular bars and flat planes. He maintained a deliberate balance between near-abstract geometry and glancing references to urban life. A large canvas from this disc series is held in the collection of the Musée d'Art Moderne de Paris.
