Nature Morte (Still Life) — Fernand Léger

A huge Cubist Abstract canvas print in yellow and black. Its softer palette and painterly ease suit a bedroom, wellness space or private lounge, offering quiet colour and movement without dominating the room.

Visual Presence

Soft yellow rectangular slabs and inky black planes sit against a dusky rose ground, overlaid with pooled lavender-blue ovals and two pink seed-pod forms rising on curved stems. Loose white brush shapes, trailing black lines and dotted, dashed paths thread lightly across the surface. The palette is gentle and painterly — rose, cream-yellow, cornflower blue and black — with a fluid, hand-drawn ease.

About the Art

By the 1920s Fernand Léger had turned from the purely mechanical imagery of his earlier years toward animated still-life compositions, gathering familiar organic and everyday forms — pods, leaves, stems and ribbons — and arranging them for balance of colour and line. Working in the Purist orbit he shared with Le Corbusier and Ozenfant, he set rounded, hand-brushed shapes against flat blocks of colour so that recognisable objects read chiefly as plastic elements within a harmonious whole. His still lifes of these years, executed in gouache and ink as readily as in oil, are among the most inventive of his output.
