Weathered Tree on a Mountain Ridge — Stepan Kolesnikoff

Visual Presence

A gnarled, moss-green tree rises from a rocky ridge, its bare limbs arching outward in a fine tracery against the sky. Behind it, layered blue-grey mountains recede into haze beneath a soft ceiling of pink and mauve cloud. The palette is cool and painterly — deep greens and violets set against blush-toned light, worked in thick, tactile brushstrokes.

About the Art

Stepan Kolesnikoff (1879-1955) trained at the Odessa art school and the Imperial Academy of Arts in St Petersburg, where his landscapes won prizes and earned the high regard of Ilya Repin. He built his reputation on the nature of southern Russia and Ukraine, working in oil and gouache, and was especially drawn to the changing seasons of the land. After the Russian Revolution he emigrated in 1919 and settled in Belgrade, where he painted, worked as a theatre scenographer and executed decorative interiors until his death. This study of a solitary weathered tree against distant mountains reflects the observed, tactile landscape practice on which his reputation rests.
