Early Spring — Stepan Kolesnikoff

A huge Impressionist canvas print in red and grey. Its soft, thawing light and single warm accent suit an executive office, gallery wall or boutique hotel suite, offering atmosphere without visual noise.

Visual Presence

A broad, bare-limbed tree dominates the foreground, its tangle of fine branches spilling across a soft mauve-grey mist. Two red-roofed barns glow warm against the muted haze, while melting snow lingers in bright patches over pinkish, thawing ground. The palette is hushed and atmospheric — dove-grey and blush tones broken by the single vivid note of red.

About the Art

Stepan Kolesnikoff was a Russian-born painter, trained in Odessa and at the Imperial Academy of Arts, whose favourite subject was southern Russian and Ukrainian nature in its rapid awakening — melting snows, floods and the first spring days. Working here in gouache on prepared card, he captures exactly that threshold moment: snow breaking up over thawing earth, a bare tree still wintry, the season turning. A vivid red barn anchors the muted haze, a device he used to warm and focus an atmospheric field. Kolesnikoff worked fluidly in both oil and gouache, and after emigrating in 1919 settled in Belgrade.
