Altarpiece, No. 2, Group X — Hilma af Klint

A big modern abstract canvas print in red and black. Its bold mirrored geometry anchors a boardroom, dining room or stairwell wall with quiet, monumental drama.

Visual Presence

The saturated reds carry across the room: at two to three metres they warm the whole space and hold their intensity even in low evening light. The inverted triangle gives the wall strong downward drama rather than calm, so it suits rooms meant to impress — dining room, bar wall, reception. Nothing else on that wall will compete.

About the Art

Hilma af Klint painted this second Altarpiece as the answer to the first, and we chose it for exactly that dialogue. Where its companion ascends toward a golden sun, here the movement inverts: stepped tiers descend between fields of intense red, tracing unity coming down into the diversity of the material world. Together the two directions completed her vision of spiritual evolution, intended for the altar room of an imagined spiral temple. Hidden from public view for decades, the Altarpieces have since drawn vast audiences, including at the Guggenheim's landmark retrospective — this is the fiercer, warmer half of the pair.
