Altarpiece, No. 1, Group X — Hilma af Klint

An oversized abstract canvas print in black and gold. Its burnished-gold disc glows out of the darkness, giving a hotel lobby, reception or double-height entry an instant sense of ceremony.

Visual Presence

On a large wall the black ground recedes and the gold disc becomes the brightest object in the room, catching lamplight like a beacon. The rainbow pyramid pulls the eye upward, lending the space a vertical, almost ceremonial lift. It commands a tall wall that needs one grand focal point — an entry, stairwell or double-height living room.

About the Art

Hilma af Klint made this the culmination of The Paintings for the Temple, the visionary cycle she believed she was called to produce — reason enough to give it a wall. She imagined the work in the altar room of a spiral temple reached by an ascending path, and the canvas diagrams that ascent: a triangle of radiant colour gradients rising from the material world to a great golden disc of unity. Kept largely unseen for decades after her death, the Altarpieces are now landmarks of early abstraction, shown in the Guggenheim's record-breaking af Klint retrospective. We chose the first: the upward one.
