Georges Seurat's The Forest at Pontaubert — an early woodland interior built from hatched strokes before his breakthrough into Pointillism, on gallery canvas.

Visual Presence

The painting presents a dense woodland interior, with slender tree trunks arranged vertically and diagonally to draw the eye upward and inward. A rich, layered green dominates the palette, punctuated by flecks of yellow, ochre, and warm brown that suggest dappled, filtered light. Small, distinct touches of colour applied side by side give the foliage a vibrating, mosaic-like texture, lending the overall mood a quiet, enclosed quality.

About the Art

Georges Seurat painted The Forest at Pontaubert during a visit to the Burgundian village of Pontaubert, producing one of a small group of early forest interiors that predates his breakthrough into systematic Pointillism. Rather than the dot-by-dot Divisionism he would later become known for, the work is built from short, parallel hatched strokes closer to Barbizon conventions — yet already reflects his interest in breaking the surface into individual marks for the eye to reassemble. The dense vertical rhythm of slender trunks anticipates the formal concerns of his major canvases. The work is held in The Met's open-access collection.
