Antibes, Petit Port de Bacon — Paul Signac

An XL Pointillist canvas print in pink and aqua. Its expansive light and jewel-toned energy suit a hotel lobby, a bright dining room or a generous living space, where the scale and colour can carry a whole wall.

Visual Presence

A luminous Mediterranean bay shimmers in thousands of small, deliberate touches of colour, with a sailing boat and a low rowing boat drifting across water flecked pink, aqua and gold. A gnarled tree curves in from the right in ribbons of crimson and orange, its blossoming canopy arching over a pale, rose-tinted sky above blue coastal hills. The whole surface glows — coral, turquoise, yellow and green mosaic tesserae held in a bright, sun-warmed haze.

About the Art

Paul Signac, a founder of Neo-Impressionism and Georges Seurat's closest ally in developing the divisionist technique, painted this view at Antibes on the Côte d'Azur, looking across to the little inlet known as the Petit Port de Bacon. By this stage his method had loosened into broad, mosaic-like strokes of pure, unmixed colour, set side by side so the eye blends them into vibrating light. The framing tree and boats belong to a favourite motif of his southern years, in which the Mediterranean coast becomes a study in radiant reflection and coloured shadow.
