R.N. Roland Holst's Orchard at Eemnes — an 1888 work from the Dutch master's early Van Gogh-influenced period, on large-format canvas.

Visual Presence

A bare-branched fruit tree dominates the foreground of a damp Dutch orchard, its dark trunk twisting against a thicket of soft greens and ochres. Smaller saplings recede toward a low wooden fence and a patch of pale spring light at the horizon. The palette is moody and tonal — moss-green, slate, ochre, with hints of blue at the sky.

About the Art

Richard Nicolaus Roland Holst (1868–1938) painted this orchard at Eemnes — a village east of Amsterdam — in 1888, early in his career when he worked in a moody Dutch Impressionist style influenced by Vincent van Gogh and the Hague School. Roland Holst later became one of the Netherlands' leading symbolist printmakers and a pioneer of Dutch monumental decoration. This early oil painting belongs to a transitional period in Dutch landscape, between Hague-School atmospheric realism and the next-generation Symbolist abstraction.
