Dream Idyll (A Valkyrie) — Edward Robert Hughes

Visual Presence

A pale, luminous maiden with streaming golden hair rides a black winged steed through a deep indigo night, her moonlit body arching against vast banks of silvered cloud. The palette is overwhelmingly blue — midnight, slate and dusk — pierced by the warm gold of her hair and the ivory glow of her skin. Far below, a dim river-city glimmers, lending the scene a hushed, dreamlike vastness.

About the Art

Edward Robert Hughes painted this nocturnal reverie of a winged rider borne through the heavens above a distant river-city, a Symbolist vision in gouache and pastel. Exhibited at London's Royal Watercolour Society, the work was shown under the title A Valkyrie and is also recorded as A Witch, placing it among the mythic, magical women favoured by the French and Belgian Symbolists Hughes admired. A close associate of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood and long-time studio assistant to William Holman Hunt, Hughes here fused meticulous detail with a shimmering, otherworldly atmosphere that made him celebrated for such flights of fantasy.
