Visual Presence

A horizontal cascade of lavender, violet and white wisteria blossoms hangs from green tendrils across the canvas, the brushwork loose and breath-like — flecks of pink, mauve and pale blue interwoven through silvery-green leaves. There is no horizon and no background — only the curtain of flowering vine.

About the Art

Claude Monet painted his Wisteria series between 1917 and 1920 from the Japanese-inspired pergola in his Giverny garden, designing the work as a horizontal frieze to crown the upper edge of his Water Lilies cycle at the Orangerie. He intended the wisteria panels to sit above the lily ponds, completing the immersive interior — vine above water — though only fragments of that scheme were ever realised. By this stage his cataracts had drastically reduced his colour discrimination, which paradoxically pushed his palette toward the high-key violets and emeralds the works are now celebrated for.

A breathing horizontal band; well suited above a long sofa, a banquette, a counter or a long passage wall in a wellness or garden-room setting.
