Early Morning After a Storm at Sea — Winslow Homer

A huge landscape canvas print in grey and green. Dawn-lit surf bursting between dark ledges gives a boardroom, dining room or living room serious, moody presence, opening the wall onto the Atlantic at first light.

Visual Presence

This canvas fills a wall with the sea turned down to a hush: grey-green surf, silvered light and a first blush of pink that gives the whole room a dawn-quiet glow. From across the room it reads as one vast horizontal of moving water, visibly widening the space it faces. It commands a long living-room or boardroom wall and holds it with calm force.

About the Art

Winslow Homer himself judged this canvas "the best picture of the sea that I have painted" — reason enough for its place here. It comes from his final decades at Prouts Neck, Maine, painting the Atlantic surf that pounded the rocks below his studio, and it was earned slowly: first conceived as a watercolour, then worked up in oil over two years, across four separate painting sessions, as Homer waited for the sea to show him the same light again. The painting hangs in the Cleveland Museum of Art, the gift of J. H. Wade; the Prouts Neck studio is now a National Historic Landmark.
