Visual Presence

This piece brings a room down to a single, still presence: a luminous white-and-grey mare glowing out of a deep brown-black field. From across the room it reads almost as a spotlight on a dark wall — warm and grounding, never stark. It suits a hallway, study or bedroom wall that wants one calm focal point and nothing else.

About the Art

Winslow Homer was still earning his living as a freelance illustrator when he visited the White Mountains of New Hampshire, and where earlier American landscape painters had emphasised wilderness, he watched the tourists who now filled the region. We chose this small oil sketch because it shows his plain-spoken eye at its most direct: a luminous mare blocked in straight against the bare dark panel, painted as a study for a horse in his larger canvas The Bridal Path, White Mountains. Loose strokes trail off unfinished at the edges — working thought made visible. It is held by the Cleveland Museum of Art, the bequest of Leonard C. Hanna Jr.
