Jan Toorop's The Sea — an 1887 study in pure surface and rhythm, where the restless water itself becomes the whole subject, on large-format canvas.

Visual Presence

An open sea fills the frame in restless, layered impasto — white-crested waves break across a green-blue surface that runs to a soft pale horizon. The water is alive with rhythmic short strokes, every wave individually built up in white, green, and faint violet. A narrow sand strip and dark seaweed anchor the lower edge.

About the Art

Jan Toorop (1858–1928) painted The Sea in 1887, the same year he joined Les XX in Brussels and began his transition between Hague School realism and Symbolist abstraction. The work is a study in pure surface and rhythm — Toorop applies short, dense strokes to make the sea itself the entire subject, with no narrative or figure. It anticipates his Symbolist masterpieces of the 1890s. The Sea is held in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
