Visual Presence

About the Art

Harald Sohlberg found this motif on an Easter skiing trip through the Rondane mountains and could not let it go, sketching a first version on the train home and working toward the definitive canvas for some fifteen years. That obsession is why it is here: few paintings earn the title of a nation's favourite, and this one was voted Norway's national painting in a public poll. It debuted at the Jubilee Exhibition marking the centenary of the constitution and now hangs in the National Museum in Oslo, widely regarded as the pinnacle of Norwegian Symbolist landscape — snow, silence and a single burning star.
