Still Life No. 15 — Marsden Hartley

A large modern abstract canvas print in black and gold. Its deep shadowed ground and glowing ochre drapery lend quiet weight and focus to a library, study or executive office wall.

Visual Presence

At two or three metres wide, the near-black ground turns the wall into a deep, quiet stage, the pale goblet glowing at its centre like a lit object. The ochre-gold and slate-blue folds carry warmth outward, so the room reads rich and candlelit rather than dark. It commands a dramatic feature wall — dining room, library, entry — and holds the eye from across the space.

About the Art

Marsden Hartley earned his place here for the rare gravity he brings to a simple arrangement — a white goblet holding a lone pink flower against cream and blue fabric. Painted while Paul Cézanne, Henri Matisse and Pablo Picasso were reshaping his art, and unlike his flatter compositions of the period, it conveys a shallow dark space behind the skewed tabletop, worked in a dry, brushy style whose shading gives real volume to the goblet and the deep folds of cloth. Hartley was a central figure of American modernism, championed in New York by Alfred Stieglitz; the painting is held by the Art Institute of Chicago.
