Provincetown — Marsden Hartley

Visual Presence

At two to three metres this print reads as pure quiet architecture, dusty pink, sand and slate settling into calm order across the wall. It throws no glare and no noise, so the room around it feels composed, considered, still. About the Art

Marsden Hartley earned his place in this catalogue with a provenance most works can only envy: this quiet geometry of Cape Cod belonged to Alfred Stieglitz, Hartley's great champion, and entered the Art Institute of Chicago as a gift from Georgia O'Keeffe. Painted in oil on composition board, it distils the harbour town that drew America's modernists into flat, interlocking planes of chalky colour. We chose it because it has been tested at the highest level — the Museum of Modern Art's landmark survey Inventing Abstraction, major Hartley retrospectives — and because early American abstraction this composed is rare on any wall.
