Visual Presence

At two to three metres wide, this print turns a wall into a source of quiet — its whites, soft greys and browns lower the volume of the whole room. From across the room it reads as one pale, still plane with a single dark door holding the centre. It suits calm, uncluttered walls: bedrooms, studies and hallways that need composure rather than colour.

About the Art

Vilhelm Hammershøi earned his reputation as Denmark's painter of stillness, and we chose this work because it carries that stillness outdoors — a rarity in his catalogue of muted interiors. Painted during a summer stay at Frederiksværk, a small town in North Zealand, its title translates simply as House Gable. Frederiksværk. Summer. A closed door, darkened windows and a palette of soft greys, whites and browns show him applying the restraint of his famous rooms to open air. The painting is held by SMK, the National Gallery of Denmark, in Copenhagen — quiet concentration you can live with daily.
