Alfred Stieglitz's Georgia O'Keeffe — Hands and Thimble — from his 300-portrait study of O'Keeffe, treating her hands as sculpture, on fine-art canvas.

Visual Presence

Two delicate hands meet in close framing, one finger fitted with a silver thimble, the other lifted in a gesture of quiet poise. The composition is sculptural — fingers tapered, knuckles articulated, skin tonally luminous against a deep black ground. Pure silver-gelatin tonality: deep blacks, soft midtones, no ornament.

About the Art

Alfred Stieglitz (1864–1946) photographed Georgia O'Keeffe more than 300 times between 1917 and 1937 in what became one of the most ambitious portrait series in the history of photography. Hands and Thimble belongs to the first phase of this project, when Stieglitz studied O'Keeffe's hands and torso as sculptural objects — refining the modernist vocabulary that would shape American photography for the next half century. Multiple platinum and palladium prints held by The Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York.
