About the Art
The anonymous photographer behind this sequoia study hauled a large-plate camera into California's big tree groves in the era when such prints astonished audiences on both sides of the Atlantic — work by peers like Carleton Watkins, Charles Leander Weed and Isaiah West Taber helped build the case for protecting the groves. We chose it because the image did real work in the world: photographs like this made distant giants believable, and worth saving. Catalogued under the Dutch title Stam van een mammoetboom — trunk of a mammoth tree — it records one fire-scarred base; the maker's name has not survived.

Stretched Canvas Construction
Each canvas is mounted on 4.2 cm (1.65 in) deep stretcher bars made from Australian pine. The canvas is tightly stretched and wrapped around these solid wooden frames, giving it a strong, gallery-grade structure with noticeable depth — ideal for large or statement pieces.
This thickness adds durability and a clean, modern presentation, allowing the artwork to stand out beautifully without additional framing.
Edge Style
By default, all stretched canvases use a mirrored edge for a clean, continuous look. If you prefer a black or white edge, please mention it in your checkout notes; otherwise, the mirrored edge will be applied automatically.
For sizes exceeding 200x300 cm, we will split the canvas into two seamless panels to meet courier shipping limitations. The split is crafted to ensure the image remains continuous and flawless across both panels. You can choose to display the panels with or without a gap for different visual effects.
If you select the framed option, each panel will be framed separately to ensure secure shipping and easy handling.
Examples:
- A 240x300 cm artwork will be divided into two panels of 120x300 cm each.
- A 240x400 cm artwork will be split into two panels of 240x200 cm each.
This approach maintains the visual impact and flexibility of oversized pieces while accommodating shipping needs.
