Attributed to Nicolaes Piemont, Ceiling of a Cloudy Sky with Birds — a c.1690 ceiling panel painted for a Dutch dolls' house, as a gallery canvas print.

Visual Presence

A soft sky of pale blue and white cumulus clouds spreads across the panel, with a scatter of small dark birds rising into the upper distance. The atmosphere is luminous and quiet — clouds dissolving into open air, no horizon, no ground. Originally painted to be viewed looking upward as a miniature ceiling.

About the Art

Painted around 1690 and attributed to Nicolaes Piemont (1659–1709), this small ceiling panel was made for a Dutch dolls' house — the elaborately furnished cabinets-of-curiosity built by wealthy Amsterdam women in the late 17th century. Petronella Oortman's celebrated dolls' house at the Rijksmuseum is the best-known surviving example. Each room of these cabinets was decorated by a leading painter of the day, miniaturising the visual world of Dutch high society.
