Frederic Edwin Church's In the Woods, Maine — an immersive vertical forest scene on a large canvas, by America's great Hudson River School master.

Visual Presence

A vertical forest interior scene with a quiet stream winding through the foreground, mossy boulders catching dappled light, fallen logs and tangled undergrowth, and sun-dappled birch and pine trunks rising into a high canopy of greens and golden ochres. The atmosphere is intimate, contemplative and luminous — every leaf rendered with patient observation.

About the Art

Frederic Edwin Church painted In the Woods, Maine in 1850, only a year after he completed his apprenticeship with Thomas Cole, founder of the Hudson River School. It belongs to the early phase of his career, when he was studying forest interiors on his summer trips to Maine and Vermont and developing the patient pre-photographic naturalism that would soon make him America's most famous landscape painter. The vertical composition pulls the eye through the woods rather than across them — a Romantic device that turns the forest into a kind of sanctuary or natural cathedral.
