Melchior d'Hondecoeter's The Floating Feather — his most celebrated work, painting the exotic waterfowl of a royal Dutch menagerie, on fine-art canvas.

Visual Presence

A great white pelican fills the foreground in a Dutch palace garden pool, surrounded by a flamingo, a crowned crane, ducks and small darting finches. A single soft feather floats on the water's surface — the painting's quiet centre. Deep umber shadow behind the birds throws their plumage forward in sharp baroque relief, while a small distant landscape opens to a luminous sky at upper right.

About the Art

Melchior d'Hondecoeter (1636–1695) was the foremost Dutch Golden Age painter of birds and poultry. The Floating Feather is his most celebrated work — depicting the exotic waterfowl of Soestdijk Palace's princely menagerie, where Stadtholder Willem III collected rare birds from across the Dutch trading empire. The lone feather drifting on the pool gives the painting its quiet emotional anchor amid the baroque drama. Held in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam.
