Visual Presence

An extremely wide horizontal canvas of pond surface, with lily pads compressed into small notes across a field that reads as almost pure colour: violet, rose, emerald and silver-blue dissolving into one another with no clear figure or ground. The brushwork is broken and atmospheric; the surface tension between paint and pond becomes the subject.

About the Art

Claude Monet painted The Water Lily Pond between 1917 and 1919, during the final phase of his Grandes Décorations cycle. By this stage his cataracts were severely advanced, his palette had shifted toward the heightened violets and reds of his late period, and he was working at near-monumental scale. The result is among the most radically abstract of his lifetime — the lily pads almost dissolved, the reflections of sky and willow no longer locatable, the entire canvas operating as a continuous coloured surface. These works directly anticipated Abstract Expressionist scale and surface treatment four decades later.
