About the Art

Claude Monet painted The Turkeys in 1877 for a Paris collector named Ernest Hoschedé, who commissioned a series of large decorative panels for his country estate at Montgeron. It is one of the few works in which Monet treats domestic animals as the principal subject, foregrounding the birds rather than landscape or architecture. Within months of the commission Hoschedé would go bankrupt and the panels were dispersed; The Turkeys eventually entered the Musée d'Orsay collection, where it remains today as a singular example of Monet's brief decorative-commission phase.
