John Henry Twachtman's Icebound — a hushed tonal Impressionist winter from his Greenwich farm, now in the Art Institute of Chicago, on large-format canvas.

Visual Presence

A frozen stream winds quietly through a snow-covered Connecticut landscape, its dark ice cutting a soft S-curve through luminous white. Pale lavender and silver shadow drift across the snow-banks; bare grasses and twigs punctuate the upper edges in fine warm umber. The palette is hushed and tonal — soft whites, pearl grey, faint blue, with just a whisper of warm earth at the bank's edge.

About the Art

John Henry Twachtman (1853–1902) was a leading American Impressionist and a founding member of The Ten — the breakaway group of Impressionist painters who exhibited together from 1898 onward. Icebound was painted at Twachtman's Greenwich, Connecticut farm, where he developed his distinctive tonal Impressionism — drawing more on Whistler's silvery palette than on French colour. The painting is now in the Art Institute of Chicago.
