About this artwork

Cascading willow branches drift across a violet-and-green pond as Monet's brush dissolves into pure light. Long ribbons of feathered foliage hang from above; below, water lilies float in clusters of pink, lemon and pale jade. There's no horizon, no shore — only the surface and what it reflects. This is the Monet of Giverny in his final years, where the lily pond stopped being a subject and became the entire field of vision, layered in loose, almost gestural strokes that anticipate abstraction.
