We chose it because the Thyssen-Bornemisza calls this group of four still lifes the turning point in his move to abstraction — the objects survive only as discs, wedges and bars pinned into a pale blue field. The vocabulary is Cubist, out of his reading of Cézanne, and the triangles that dominate every still life in the series are read by Christopher Green as Kandinsky's symbolism arriving in Dutch painting. A year later he launched the journal De Stijl, and painting like this, curved and hand-brushed, was behind him.
