Franz Marc spent his short career trying to paint animals from the inside rather than as scenery, and Three Cats is where that turns playful. We chose it because the three cats, one red, one black and white, one striped yellow, are pulled apart into planes and then locked back together by colour, so the picture still reads clearly at wall scale. Marc co-founded the Blue Rider circle with Wassily Kandinsky and was killed at Verdun at thirty-six, which makes work like this a short, concentrated run.
