We chose it because Grigoriev had already made peasant Russia his subject — his Raseya album of hard, un-idealised village faces appeared in Petrograd, and after he left the country in 1919 he reissued it enlarged in Berlin. Here he hands that village back to Sergei Esenin, the poet who came out of one: a boy in a red shirt with the harvest running on behind his head. Esenin was in Berlin and Paris with Isadora Duncan in the year this is dated; he was dead two years later, at thirty.
