A shell splinter wounded him defending the Antwerp forts in 1914; he was evacuated to England and spent four and a half years in remote villages. The canvas is signed SIDFORD 1917, after the Devon village his family reached that spring. Cut off from the art world, he wrote to Gustave De Smet and André De Ridder for news of Cubism and German Expressionism, and worked out the heavy handling that became Flemish Expressionism.
