Charles Demuth painted Dancing Sailors in watercolour over graphite during his immersion in Greenwich Village nightlife, when he chronicled nightclubs, performers and bathhouses. Three couples turn across a chequered floor; four of the six figures are sailors, and two of them dance together — a subtle, pointed scene Demuth kept almost entirely private, exhibiting it only once in his lifetime, at the Museum of Modern Art. A nearly identical composition belongs to MoMA; this sheet is in the Cleveland Museum of Art.
