André Derain Large Canvas Prints

André Derain (1880–1954) was one of the founding painters of Fauvism, the movement that put strong, unmixed colour ahead of copying what the eye sees.

This page holds one of his works, Mountains at Collioure (1905). Printed one to three metres wide, the hillside opens the wall out instead of sitting on it, and the colour carries right across a big room. It suits a dining room, a reception area, a hotel lobby or an executive office, where a small picture would disappear. From a few steps back you read the shapes and the light. Up close you see the brushwork.

Printed to order in Melbourne from 100×80 cm up to 300×240 cm, as a rolled print, stretched canvas or in an oak floating frame. The hillside is laid down in flat orange and red with a blue mountain lying along the top of it and no shadow anywhere in the picture, so a living room, a reception area or a hotel breakfast room keeps a midday warmth on its wall right through a grey afternoon.

Visual Presence

Printed two to three metres wide, the orange and red slope across the upper half throws warm colour down the whole wall, so a north-facing living room or a reception area reads as sunlit on a dull day. From the far side of the room only three masses carry — the red and orange hill, the blue mountain lying along it and the dark blue grove below — so the print holds a long sightline without turning busy. Walk up to it and that grove breaks into hundreds of separate blue, teal and green dabs with bare white canvas left showing between them, which keeps a wall people pass every day worth a second look.

About the Art

André Derain (1880–1954), Fauvism, cubism, painted 1905. André Derain (1880–1954), Fauvism, painted 1905. We chose it for the summer that made the movement. Matisse invited Derain to Collioure, a fishing port on the French Mediterranean coast, and the two of them spent the season deciding that colour did not have to describe what a thing actually looked like. Derain painted this hillside orange, its mountain blue, and left bare canvas showing between the strokes. That autumn a critic saw such pictures at the Salon d'Automne and called the painters wild beasts, which is how Fauvism got its name. Oil on canvas, 81.3 by 100.3 centimetres, National Gallery of Art, Washington, from the John Hay Whitney collection.

Size & Finish

Made to order in 8 single-piece sizes, 100×80 cm to 240×200 cm, and as a two-piece set up to 300×240 cm.
